Meeting notes: 11th August 2021
Present: Katie, Hannah, Daryl
Summary: Reviewed new website format, talked about types of resources we want to include, where we want to host the website, prep for faculty meeting presentation
Things I want to report/discuss:
- New website layout: https://katiesavv.notion.site/katiesavv/Bringing-Contemporary-Physicists-to-the-Classroom-draft-v-2-b929aa4f7d114bfebfcf909f424b936f
- ‘About us’ section update
- URL within physics or real subdomain? Where on the physics webpage to feature?
- Which slides to feature in faculty presentation
- Keynote switch
- Resources page
Summary of discussion points:
- Replace ‘badass physicists’ with ‘super cool physicists’ (for now...)
- Include keynote, PowerPoint, and pdf versions of the slides.
- Prioritize making slides for a male researcher and feature him on the front page first-load before the faculty meeting.
- A subdomain of the physics webpage will likely be easier to handle, and we can create a tab under the ‘EDI’ section of the physics website to feature this for now. I will continue to communicate with Juan about setting this up and aim to have it up before the faculty meeting presentation.
- Put ‘in progress’ on links to slides that are not complete.
- Get rid of ‘draft v2’ in the title of the webpage before we present it
- Happy with the general new layout of the webpage.
- Remove resource section of ‘About Us’ page. Too much redirection can be useless and confusing, and can easily make things seem out of date. Instead, we can include some infographics with easily digestible information to supplement this resource.
- For example https://spark.iop.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/Top%20Ten%20Poster%20Green%20Science_1.pdf
- Research if there are any other obvious things to include, if not leave it at that.
- Include a ‘How to make slides’ section on the ‘Recommend a Physicist’ sub-page. This will redirect to a page outlining how people can make their own slides and contribute to the webpage.
- Other prep for upcoming faculty meeting:
- Create some slides (or just one) outlining how this project was started and what we envision for the future
- Inclusion in the hackathon?
- Have an annual hack session where students volunteer to make slides?
- Incorporate this into undergraduate term projects. Students can make slides for a researcher contributing to a field they’re studying for their term project, to supplement their project.Learning can happen in both ways: from presenting these slides in the classroom, and from the act of creating these slides. I really like this idea personally because I learned a lot of science from making these slides, and I now have new role models (which are super important for developing a sense of belonging in physics).
- More funding, and someone continuing to work on the project like I am?
- Meet next week before the faculty meeting to go over what will be presented!
