Let's get you oriented with the basics about your workspace! Below is a quick walkthrough of what you need to know to get started 🙌
1. Rely on your sidebar
Your sidebar is your navigational mission control for Notion.
- Click any page to hop right there.
- Click the toggles to see sub-pages nested inside your pages. (You can nest infinitely!)
- Open all toggles to get a bird's eye view of all your work.
- Close toggles to keep things simple and focused.
- If you're using Notion with other people:
- You'll all see and share the pages under
Workspace
. - Pages just for you and your eyes only are under
Private
. - Drag and drop pages in your sidebar to rearrange them however you want and move them between sections.
2. Drag & drop
Nearly everything in Notion can be moved and molded instantaneously using drag-and-drop. Just like you can move pages in your sidebar, you can move content around your page.
- Hover over any piece of content (including text).
- The
⋮⋮
icon that appears to the left is your handle. Click, hold, and drag. - Drag and drop that content wherever you want it — including into columns!
3. Follow the breadcrumbs
At the top of every Notion page, you'll see horizontal breadcrumb navigation showing you where the page you have open is located in your workspace, and which pages it is nested inside. Kind of like directories on your computer 🍞
- Click on any page in this breadcrumb to jump right to it.
4. Search your workspace
Find what you're looking for fast with Quick Find
at the top of your sidebar. Clicking it (or using the shortcut cmd/ctrl
+ p
) opens a window where you can search or jump to recently visited pages.
- Type any keyword to search all the pages you have access to.
- Click any of your recent/commonly used pages under the search bar to go straight to them.
