Marcel Agüeros is a Puerto Rican astronomer who is a professor at Columbia University. His work focuses on the characterization of low mass stars through observations. He uses large datasets (e.g., Gaia) to look for relationships between stellar age, rotation and magnetic activity.
‣
Researcher's background:
Marcel Agüeros received his B.A. in Astronomy from Columbia, his M.Phil in Physics from the University of Cambridge, U.K., and earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Washington in 2006. Before joining the faculty at Columbia, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory from 2006-2010.
‣
Societal relevance of work:
Though population studies and relations between the properties of low mass stars have existed for decades, there remain many uncertainties in the formulation of these relations. The establishment of such a relation would have a profound impact not only on stellar evolution, but also on understanding the planets orbiting these stars. Marcel Agüeros is involved in the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project at the Vera Rubin observatory. This is one of the largest astronomical datasets to ever be produced, with a full scan of the visible sky completed every few nights.
